Attorney Profiles - Child:Laura Ashmore

Laura N. Ashmore

"My focus has always been on using the law as a means to effect positive change," says Laura N. Ashmore. She understands family law as a most essential practice, a matrix of complicated and far-reaching issues. "As a family lawyer, I assist people during what can be one of the worst times of their life. I offer compassion and professionalism as we work together to navigate this difficult process."

Ashmore largely credits her decision to concentrate on family law to her father, a psychiatrist. "I had worked hard to diversify, to make myself a full-service attorney," she says, "but observing my father's work and recognizing the impact of his singular focus, and considering my own interest in psychology, I realized I could be the strongest advocate for my clients by concentrating on the practice of family law."

Ashmore possesses a remarkably varied professional background, including early clerkships in the Night Narcotics Unit of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and in the Murder Task Force Unit of the Cook County Public Defender's Office. For four years she was in solo practice, with an emphasis on criminal defense, immigration and family law.

Ashmore's current practice centers on complex family law cases involving child custody concerns including visitation, child support and parentage matters and high-net-worth individuals, as well as those needing prenuptial agreements.

Ashmore strives to educate and empower: "I welcome my clients as active participants in their case," she says. "I listen to my clients, help manage their expectations and guide them through the process. It's easy for clients to dwell on details of their case that, while unpleasant, are temporary. It's my job to sustain a sense of the bigger picture, to help them see there is a light at the end of the tunnel. And I assure them," she adds with a chuckle, "that it's not an oncoming train."

Clients appreciate Ashmore's fresh perspective, and her demeanor in the courtroom has garnered praise as well. "Some lawyers can be overly demonstrative and melodramatic," she says, "and I've heard from a number of judges they appreciate the way I present in the courtroom. I am always passionate about my cases, but I will also always present with clarity and control."

Ashmore combines wide-ranging legal expertise with concentrated skill in family law to consistently produce successful outcomes for clients. Her diverse experience makes her a natural fit with the other attorneys of Davis Friedman, whose backgrounds contrast and complement each other to provide representation that is both individualized and comprehensive.
